Contract Furniture UK for Union Jacks

Warings fits out Union JacksIt’s not just the menu at Jamie Oliver’s new Union Jacks restaurant that is designed to take you on a trip down memory lane to re-discover old favourites – the furniture does too.

Formica, an old school stool, graph paper and a potter’s table have all been used as inspiration by designers BlackSheep Design working with Norfolk-based Warings Furniture to create the retro-styled prints, tables, chairs, counters and shelves in the new Central St Giles restaurant.

Warings Furniture supplied timber table tops rubbed down and painted with red bands to reflect the potter’s table used by Jamie in his recent TV programme ‘Jamie’s Great Britain’, along with Formica tables featuring a graph paper print and bespoke metal edging to bring back memories of school days and the traditional British cafe.

In addition, over 100 custom chairs were created in burgundy and beige perforated leather and stools to match inspired by an old plywood school chair found in an antiques market.

The very specific look and feel of the furniture required by Union Jacks meant that a bespoke solution was needed, and that the prototyping phase was key to getting the right look and feel to the fittings and furnishing.

As Stuart Smith, director of Warings Furniture, explained the company’s long history of working in the hospitality sector and the flexibility of the design and manufacturing facilities at its Norfolk headquarters meant that they were able to contribute ideas and suggestions to help make the designers’ vision a practical reality.

“We ensure our furniture looks good, wears well and is fit for purpose. We input to the design phase to make sure the pieces and materials really complement the venue while addressing practical issues such as the strength of chair frames and keeping noise levels down by using rubber feet on tables and chairs. It’s the complete service from design, to the selection of materials, down to the tiniest ergonomic details such as a chair foot rest that our customers value.”

Emma Freed, a designer at BlackSheep Design, said: “Warings were a pleasure to work with and the one-off furniture pieces they produced to our brief really bring the restaurant to life”.

Warings Furniture has also supplied contract furniture for Jamie’s Italian restaurants in the UK and Australia, and regularly works with other major hotel and restaurant chains including Travelodge, Pret A Manger, Wetherspoons, Pizza Express and the recently opening Delauneys in Aldwych.
